Adoption Limits

To paraphrase the article, Gov. Mike Beebe is unhappy about the vote to limit adopting children to married couples only.

I think I’m with the Gov. on this one.   Your ability to love a child and show them a good life should not be dependent on your sexual orientation or marital status.  There are some people now that are married that should have their kids taken from them.  But the people have spoken and it is now law and we have to abide by that.

I guess my questions for today are:

Do you feel  its right to ban homosexual and unmarried couples from adopting?

Also, do you think this is something that should be voted on by the voters or something that should have been left up to the legislature?   It seems to me someone adopting a child has no direct affect on another person.  The only affect I can see is that you don’t have to pay as much in taxes for foster care.  That should make some people happy.

Hmmm…tricky. I have to be honest here. I think that homes consisting of a (good) mother and a (good) father are ideal. I think nature very obviously supports that argument by virtue of the fact that neither two men nor two women can naturally reproduce. That said, I certainly concur with the statement that being able to reproduce certainly isn’t indicative of being a good parent, and that many straight couples should have their kids taken away. This is a tricky argument. Are gay people capable of lovinig and nuturing a child? Absolutely. If they are willing to take a child out of the system, should any (preceived) complications/shortcomings of having a two father/two mother household be measured against the obvious shortcomings of a life within “the system?” Sure. I really don’t know. What makes this especially tricky is that, at least at a very young age, the child has little or no say so in the matter, straight or gay. As with ALL laws in my opinion, I think it should be left to the majority of society to vote on, not the legislature. But then againn, most people shouldn’t be allowed to vote, b/c they blindly check boxes instead of informing themselves beforehand. Maybe I just contradicted myself. Maybe we should let the legislature decide. But they’re subject ot all manner of special interest lobbying, and they’re still elected by the same people we probably can’t trust to research the issues. So maybe they should just let us, the Conference Callers, decide. You can trust us…we’re above the influence!

So, to totally sidetrack Wood’s point, would it be fair if I proposed that only people who have paid in taxes in the last 4 years get to vote? Why should the receiving my money and the benefit of public services I pay for be allowed to decide how much I pay in and how my money is spent? Why is the right to vote given to everyone regardless of their contribution to society? Just a thought. Please direct all hatemail to cmacbgoode@hotmail.com…it’ll go straight to my blackberry so I’ll know how wrong I am in realtime. Just know anything I receive may get posted. And please, be kind, don’t sign me up for spam…this is an intellectual endeavor, after all…

As far as banning homosexual couples from adopting… I can give a religious answer, but a lot of religious people are nuts. With that said, I think it should be on case-by-case basis, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc… on the basis of ARE YOU FIT AND CAPABLE OF RAISING THIS CHILD? Period.

And I think this issue should be up to the people, and not the legislature. I think there’s more of a backlash when leglislatures pass laws that could have been voted upon. With the lottery here in AR, a lot of Bible-thumping religious people would have been crying about the liberal government if the legislature passed a law regarding the lottery. The people decided. It’s done.
