Happy New Year. Welcome to a new decade and all that jazz.
As I go into the New Year, I dread going back to the gym. Every year I have to wait hours on end to get to my machine because someone has decided that their new years resolution is to take off a few thousand pounds this year only to give up in a week when they realize it actually takes work.
I hate resolutions. Most people make them and never stick to them. I also don’t like them because I feel like you knew you needed to change well before the New Year started.
A read a blog today on Biggerpockets.com that said it best (read the full entry here)…
Resolutions are generally nothing more than a “wish list” of things people want in their lives. They seldom remember them by mid-year, much less bring them to fruition by year end. This truth is why the whole resolution process has been diluted to not much more than the punch line of a joke….But isn’t the quality of your life more than a joke? Isn’t the quality of your relationships more than an item on some vague “wish list”?
Why not decide today, right now, to make 2010 the year you took your life back from mediocrity? Instead of treating your hopes and dreams like a “wish list”, create a plan to make them a reality. Create your life, don’t just “get through” it. You do not have to settle for an average life. Instead of resolutions, write down clear, vivid goals…then start to plan specific actions steps to achieve them. I can tell you from experience, if you begin to unlock your mind to your true potential, you will transform your life. I’ve done it.
There is only one person who can change your life…YOU. And you can do it, you simply have to break free from the chains of self-limiting beliefs. I’ve studied personal development for some time and only recently put it together to see my true potential. And I can promise you, once you take off the self imposed blinders of doubt and fear, life truly begins. Don’t live to someone else’s idea of what happiness is….design your life or someone else will….
So….resolve to not make resolutions…instead, take responsibility for your life…absolute responsibility…then you will start to live your dream life…
So Conference Callers. Do you believe in resolutions? Do you ever follow them?

A couple of weeks ago Kev did a post on Google and it’s aims at cloud computing.
I have been been keeping up with the news and it seems like everyday this week Google has had something in the news that will revolutionize the way we use computers. Here are just a few things…
Google Goggles – This allows users to search by pics.
Real Time Searches – As you are typing it, it becomes a search result.
Google DNS – Bascially creating a phonebook of all websites for you.
And that’s just the tip of the ice berg. Have you ever taken a look at everything Google offers. It’s kind of scary.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Google. I use Google Chrome. I have a Gmail. Account. I was even thinking about getting the Droid at one time.
I think they are creating a new realm of computing that we will all enjoy. But they are also becoming a huge company that can rival Microsoft and they collect a lot of your information everytime you use one of their products. So let’s keep our eyes on King Google.
What are you’re thoughts? Do you think Google is scary? Do you trust them? Am I being paranoid?
Don’t answer that last question.

http://money.cnn.com/2009/12/08/news/economy/Obama_TARP_jobs/index.htm?cnn=yes
Well Obama is putting more money into Main Street.
He wants to expand tax breaks to the small businesses for new hires and equipment purchases.
He is also outlining a plan to expand the Stimulus package by $50 billion to help out Main Street.
His justification is that, “There is more wiggle room in the federal budget since the 2008 financial system bailout program will cost $200 billion less than expected.”
Republicans have pushed back saying that any gains on government investments in banks or unexpected savings should be used to pay down the skyrocketing deficit.”
I’ll be honest. I have to side with the Republicans on this one. If you get any extra money in your bank account, the last thing you need to do is spend more money. Let’s cut down this debt, please.

So you are at work, and Jimmy the office “nice guy” comes over to say good morning. This is probably the hardest part of your day. Now Jimmy’s a good guy, but you’re just not attracted to him. And he usually lingers a little too long when he hugs you. Well one day Jimmy takes your kind hug as his entry into trying something a little further. Maybe he decides to tell you, “you look really nice” or “he wants to take you on a date”. Now if you are a rational creature you will tell him politely no and hopefully it doesn’t ruin the office place acquaintance. Or you could be crazy as a loon and call sexual harassment on him.
Then you have Kent. Kent is the office Brad Pitt/Hottie/Slut. Well one night you and Kent are working late and he decides he’s going to try to have his way with you. Next thing you know, the copy machine is taking full color photos of your nether region.
Now how is it that possible that two of your co-workers can approach in two different ways and get inexplicable results? One guy almost gets a face full of pepper spray while being respectful and the other gets a chance to make a fond memory at the copy machine by treating you like dirt.
Well it’s a little thing I like to call the Attraction-Harassment scale.
Note: Don’t try to take it. It’s already copyrighted.

There is basically an inverse relationship between how attracted you are to a person and how you gauge their actions towards you.
In other words… The uglier a person is to you, the less you will let them get away with.
It is derived from the Crazy-Hot scale from the show How I Met Your Mother?. I love that show. Barney Stinson for President!
You see it all the time in your daily life…
1.Regular dude sends a drink. Girl takes it and pays him no mind. Rich guy sends a bottle. Girl goes home with rich guy.
2.Girl attracted to a guy plays hard to get, and guy engages her in said game. Girl not attracted to guy “pursuing” claims he’s a bug-a-boo/stalker.
So give me an example of your Attraction-Harassment episodes. Do you think the scale is right?

There is a story on CNN about Google having an image search result that had Michelle Obama altered to resemble a monkey. Read the story here.
I know a lot of people have been petitioning Google to block this image, but I know I’ve seen pictures of George W. Bush on the internet looking the same way. As a matter of fact, I know people have morphed his image onto a Curious George book. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Bush, but I don’t want anybody treating him less than human… And I really don’t want anybody treating our first lady that way. But in both cases, I feel people have the right to do and say what they want as long as they aren’t impeding on the rights of another person. But I’ll ask you guys:
Is racism protected under the 1st amendment? Do hate speech and/or acts (making pictures… not beating on people) fall under the 1st amendment? Let me know why. Also, should Google have blocked this image?
Oh yeah and
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Well this year we have seen some pretty horrific crime stories? But a lot of these things seem like they could have been avoided if someone would just open their eyes. Let’s look at some of these things.
Jaycee Lee Duggard
This young lady was kept in someone’s backyard for 18 years and noone noticed anything. I find that hard to believe.
and then there’s this crazy fool.
Anthony Sowell
Who has killed at least 11 women and had them stashed in his house. You mean to tell me you have 11 bodies stinking up the neighborhood and no one noticed anything. I find that hard to believe.
Then the most tragic story of all. The beautiful
Shaniya Davis
Who was sold by her own mother into sexual servitude. Here dad thought it was okay to leave her with her mom because she found employment. Now I’m not the brightest bulb in the box. But I don’t understand how you thought it was ever okay to leave these two together.

Are people just oblivious these days? Or am I reading too much into these things? Or am I expecting too much out of people? Let me know my conference call people.

I was having a conversation with some friends about sexuality and gender. We were discussing it in reference to Chaz Bono and his/her recent sex change. This was the main question to our discussion… Would you have a relationship with a post-op transexual, pre-op transexual, or do you view gender in a more holistic sense as mind and body both being in their orginal form?
Well to answer that question I have to pose another question. What do you feel determines your gender? There have been countless stories of people who were born physically men who said mentally they have always thought, felt, and lived like a woman. The only thing that has kept them from being thought of that way was their genitalia. And vice versa for women. Then there are people out there that would say that you are born with a certain set of sex organs and that is what you are. You wanting to be different than that is just a sinful nature.
So I ask you. What do you think sex is determined by? Your physical self or your mental self? And with that answer would you have a relationship with someone that started off as one sex physically and went through a transformation to another?
I say for myself.. I would have to have someone that was a woman from birth both mentally and physically. Can’t even give you reasons why at this point. But that would be my preference.

Why would this be a bad thing? Any business that was actually making real sales would still exist. If Wall Street failed, Wal-mart is not going out of business. And as long as we have Wal-mart,what else do we need?
I guess one problem would be when it comes to retirement. But retirement money is all an illusion. It’s Phantom Money. There is this hope that there is a bigger sucker in the end. (Now let me make a disclaimer. I’m not saying investing bad. I think it’s great, but the way most people invest is on the premise of a bigger sucker.) It seems that basically upon retirement older generations sale their stock to younger generations. The younger generations hope that a stock will one day increase in value that justifies the price they paid for it. So they can then sale that to a younger generation. So again why does Wall Street exist and why can’t it fail?
I know a lot of people will suffer, but aren’t we just prolonging an inevitable future? As you can see from my tone I’m not a big fan of Wall Street. But I really want to explore 3 possible scenarios of Wall Street failing. I’m not an economist, and I only have so much space and time to write. Excuse me if I don’t explain these fully. All the scenarios start with some growing pains.
1. Great Depression 2.0 – The way the media presented it this is what we were headed for a year ago before the bailouts.
a. Anarchy - in this situation basically you need to imagine Rwanda. When their economy failed their inflation rate skyrocketed. Imagine needing a billion dollars just to buy toilet tissue. In this scenario if Wall Street failed the thought is it would send a shockwave through the world. Fear would grip people. “Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to the dark side of the force.” Basically people would run a muck because the system the trusted in had failed them.
b. The 1930’s - Which is basically you will see people in soup lines and living bad until the economy turned around and went back to it’s old ways.
2. Depression then New System – In this situation people would learn their lesson. (which as we can see by the fact that wall street firms went right back to paying their employees too much is likely not to happen) There would be more oversight of Wall Street, and we wouldn’t run around selling stuff that didn’t have any value to it. This would be the equivalent to reinstalling your operating system on your computer. Sure you wipe out everything and there are some growing pains, but now you make sure that you use your computer properly. So basically bread lines and then good times under a new system.
3. No Wall Street, we invest for ourselves (Least likely to happen) – Maybe we will get rid of change Wall Street the same way the internet is getting rid of changing the music industry. Why do we need to pay people exorbitant fees to show us how to loose money?
What do you guys think? What do you think would happen if Wall Street was allowed to fail?

From USA Today…
Basically, the article says our former Vice Prez has come out against Obama for dithering on whether or not to send troops to Afghanistan more expediently. He also found issue with Obama not backing the missile defense system that borders Russia. He’s also mad that Obama called him out on his war crimes his enhanced interrogation techniques.
Is this not more of the same from the previous administration? It’s like we have to fight and fight now. “Let’s not understand the situation. Just jump in because the terrorists are going to get us.” This is just more of the ridiculous fear mongering that painted 7 years of policy for the previous administration. It’s the old “run and gun” that put us in Iraq. I wish it were a Q and A session between him and Obama. Obama could have hit him with the “I Like To Know What I’m Talking About Before I Speak” answer.
Let’s look at each situation separately:
1. Afghanistan: Basically Afghanistan’s government is unstable. And it makes sense not to send more troops into an area when the government is not stable enough to take over if/when the mission succeeds. We don’t want another Vietnam. I say to you Cheney that you failed to invade Afghanistan properly (by detouring and pouring more time, effort, money and forces into Iraq) so we don’t need your recommendations now.
2. Missile Defense: I understand the safety that you feel from having a missile defense system, but I also understand Russia’s concern with missiles being right on their border. How will we ever build an international community if we decide we’ll do whatever we want when we want to? I say to Cheney your administration and the ones before you laid the ground work for people to hate us. We can’t just do whatever we want. Let me rephrase that… We can do whatever we want. We just don’t get to choose the consequences! So maybe we need to talk to a country before we set missiles near them.
3. Call it what you want, but the pictures I saw from Guantanamo Bay indicated torture. I understand that sometimes you have to do what it takes to get out the information. But if your efforts were so noble why do you have a problem with the public knowing about it? What is the problem with telling me that you used “torture” to get information if the information was valid? I wouldn’t be mad about that. As long as the information is not information that can’t be used later. I want a transparent government. This is lack of transparency. I say to you Cheney, stop trying to protect yourself! Even if you are found guilty of war crimes, you’ll never go to jail. So just relax.
